Marie Golightly Hoagland

On April 17, 2024, Marie Hoagland beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend passed away at the age of 84 in Melba, Idaho.

Marie was born in her home, on March 20th, 1940, in Preston, Idaho. When she was a freshman in high school her family moved to Melba, Idaho. There, Marie was involved in many extracurricular activities. She particularly enjoyed twirling her baton and marching in the marching band. She was a talented softball player throughout high school and after. She attended LDS Seminary and eventually graduated from Melba High School.

While in high school, she met the love of her life, Mark Hoagland. After dating for a while, he asked for her hand in marriage. They were married on December 15, 1959, in the Idaho Falls Temple, in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

After a short time, their family grew, and three children joined them in Melba. Sadly, there was another child born, whom they named Edward. Edward lived for two days then returned to live with his Father in Heaven. He was Marie’s dream baby and had a full head of dark curly hair that she dearly loved. Marie worked side by side with Mark on the farm. Where he was, she was. She could often be found helping with the irrigating, hoeing beets, topping corn and whatever else needed to be done. One day while working on the corn picker her hand was caught in the machinery and she lost her right index finger. She taught herself how to do all she needed to do without that finger.

The only time it bothered her was when someone would shake her hand and she would hope they would not notice that she was missing a finger.

In 1966, Mark and Marie moved with their small family to Provo, Utah, so Mark could go to college at Brigham Young University. Marie was there by his side supporting him and taking care of their family that had now grown into five energetic and happy children.

In 1969 Mark and Marie moved their family back to the Melba Valley. They purchased a home south of Melba. Marie was excited about the large garden she was able to grow. She spent hours in her garden and her yard. They purchased a home south of Melba where they lived for several years.

She loved growing flowers and their yard there was full of fragrant roses. She took meticulous care of her roses and loved watching them grow and bloom. From this garden she preserved many bottles of fruits and vegetables. She enjoyed working in her garden and teaching her children how to work.

In 1971, the last of their children was born giving Mark and Marie six children. Marie was a wonderful mother and with six children there was much to do. She attended every activity that her children had and always made sure there was homecooked meals every day.

Each week she would make loaves of homemade bread and would measure all her ingredients by hand. Marie taught her children so many wonderful things in her life. She made sure to teach her children to love the Savior, she taught them how to kneel in prayer, she taught them how to work hard, and to love and serve others. She created a Christ centered home that was warm and inviting and full of laugher and love.

After several years they sold the house south of Melba and built a beautiful home back on the hill where they now reside. Marie had many jobs while living in Melba. She worked at the Melba Senior Center and helped to prepare meals for the seniors that came for lunch. She loved the ladies she worked with and made lifelong friends there. For a brief time, she was also hired as a janitor at the Melba School District. Another special job that she had, which was so dear to her heart, was cleaning the Melba Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints. She spent countless hours at the church making sure it sparkled and shined for Sunday service. Marie loved keeping the flower beds beautiful and manicuring the yards to perfection. Even after the church stopped hiring custodian’s she continued to volunteer her time to weed and care for the flowerbeds at the church. Marie was blessed with many talents. One of them was making scones. She and a few friends started making scones for the community auctions and school carnivals in Melba. After the first year of sharing their scones, they became regulars and often made hundreds of hot delicious buttery scones.

Marie also loved to make quilts, and her quilts were beautiful and unique. Anytime you could not find her she was usually in her sewing room where she made many, many, quilts. Each of her children and all her grandchildren have a quilt made just for them. She loved to talk about her quilts and quilt patterns with a special friend. She made all her friends and family feel as if they were the most important people there were. She loved to visit friends and share fruits, vegetables, and flowers from her garden and yard. Marie loved the simple life. She loved a good donut, or donuts- and endless bags of almond joys. She loved house plants and babied her cactus’s, and there was always room for one more frog or turtle.

She had an infectious smile and loved to play pranks and jokes on people. Marie was quite the prankster. In 1999 she was awarded the prankster of the year award for the Melba Senior Center and that same year was also honored as the Grand Marshall of the Melba Old Tyme 4th of July Parade. She was so excited for the honor of riding in the parade.

Marie had many church callings throughout her life for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the Relief Society Presidency, she worked in the Young Women’s, she taught the Sunbeam class for many years and loved all the little sunbeams. Marie was grateful and humbled to be able to serve two full-time missions.

She was called to serve in the Family History Center and fell in love with family history. During her time serving she researched many names for her own family and took hundreds of names to the temple. Mark and Marie were called to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to serve for two years in the Richmond Virigina Mission. They had wonderful experiences, created many memories, and made many lifelong friends. But, most importantly they were able to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of Virigina. She loved her mission.

Marie was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a firm testimony of the gospel, and loved attending the temple as often as she could. She enjoyed studying her scriptures daily and was always looking for ways to serve her fellow man as she loved serving others. Marie never missed church, until recently when her health started failing her. She loved spending time with her husband, she loved him with all her heart and soul, as he did her. It will be hard for them to be apart. She loved being happy and wanted others to be happy too.
